Jackbox released more apps including Clone Booth (a humorous photo-manipulation app) and the games Lie Swatter (a find-the-lies game of unusual facts) and Word Puttz (a word game). ĭuring this time, the company allowed the game to be played using smartphones and tablets as controllers, rather than actual game controllers. The studio rebranded as Jackbox Games in June 2013, and announced that it would continue to focus on developing social games, for mobile devices and home entertainment devices like Roku and Ouya. Near the end of 2011, Jellyvision Games was spun off into a separate company. The game, now defunct, was awarded the "Social Game of the Year" at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards. The studio later developed a Facebook version of the game, allowing them to continuously provide new trivia later, the game expanded to include a standalone mobile application that allows data sharing and competition with the Facebook version. The company released an iOS application of You Don't Know Jack and, in partnership with THQ, a console version in 2011. In 2008, as networked consoles and mobile devices became popular, Jellyvision Games was relaunched as a subsidiary of the Jellyvision Lab, hiring Mike Bilder to lead the studio. These interactive conversation products were a success, in part because of the You Don't Know Jack series' popularity. Pivoting away from games, the Jellyvision Lab focused on business software, developing a technology called the "interactive conversation interface" inspired by the voice-driven interface of You Don't Know Jack. Jellyvision Games was shelved, and the following year Gottlieb launched a new company called the Jellyvision Lab. Jellyvision attempted to enter the marketplace with console-based versions of You Don't Know Jack, but these games were unsuccessful. In 2001, the computer game market shifted, as players moved from personal computers to home consoles of the sixth generation, affecting the demand for CD-ROM games. In 1995, the company rebranded as Jellyvision and developed the first edition of You Don't Know Jack originally a PC game, its success established a franchise, and Jellyvision produced numerous installments of You Don't Know Jack from 1995 through 1998. Prior to developing You Don't Know Jack, the company created a children's trivia game called That's a Fact, Jack!. Jackbox Games was founded in 1989 by Harry Gottlieb as an educational entertainment company called Learn Television. After seven years of dormancy, Jellyvision Games was revived in 2008, and the company rebranded as Jackbox Games in 2013. Founded by Harry Gottlieb, the company operated as Jellyvision Games from 1995 until its closure in 2001. (formerly Jellyvision Games, Inc.) is an American video game developer based in Chicago, Illinois, best known for the You Don't Know Jack series of quiz-based party video games and The Jackbox Party Pack series. However, this doesn’t mean that they are shy. They are very thoughtful and analyze their every move. Sigma has a silent, mysterious nature and immense self-confidence. Vox Day and the fictional character John Wick, played by actor Keanu Reeves, are great examples of a Sigma male. Women find Sigmas as attractive as Alphas. An alpha can often consider a Sigma as a threat, but they have an interest in taking the position of the Alpha or becoming leaders. They tend to be introverted and don’t play by the social rules of the hierarchy. Sigmas are as confident as alphas, but they tend to be lone wolves who do not seek social attention to boost their self-esteem. Sigma and Alpha males are almost equal on the hierarchy. He adds that they “ rely on the social hierarchy and are therefore sensitive to the perceptions of others (especially women).” Moreover, they tend to thrive on challenges, conflict, and status jockeying. “ Alphas usually do very well financially and with women,” explains Jabba. However, they can be rather shallow and give too much importance to external appearances. These individuals tend to be successful in their careers and never shy away from taking risks. They are extroverts who love being the center of attention. Social dominance and social acceptance by their groups are extremely important to Alphas as they enjoy having a high social status. US President Donald Trump is perhaps the best example of an alpha male. Alphas are highly social and feel attracted toward submissive women. Women find them highly attractive and other men get inspired by them. They are often tall and handsome and love telling others what to do as it feeds their ego. They are natural leaders, uber-confident, macho, dominant, charismatic, and slightly aggressive. The alpha male is the stereotypical ‘bad boy‘. Now let us take a closer look at each of the personality types. Here are the 6 personality types in the hierarchy which covers a wide spectrum of socio-sexuality: There are 6 different personality types according to the socio-sexual hierarchy ranks and each personality is different in its own unique way. The Socio Sexual Hierarchy Ranks: 6 Personality Types However, among the different “schools of dermatopathology” there are large differences in the usage, understanding, and the meaning of words (much less so for dermatology.) I feel this is driven by differences in concepts, criteria, plus intangibles that really make one “dictionary” which is accepted by all an impossibility!Īdditionally on this subject there is something even more fascinating to me. The Oxford, Webster, and other well known dictionaries are accepted as “definers of the English language.” They do not differ very much. I hope this piecing together of a discussion of a word from various Ackerman sources has not lead to confusion. Also, some discussions are pieced together from multiple sources. The reason for this is that in many cases (especially in the “A’s”) they follow Bernie and Almut’s method and definitions. Some of the discussions of words are long and rambling and repetitious (i.e., in-situ). I hope my updates of Bernie’s “definitions” which I decided to do have stayed true to Bernie’s ideas and opinions (mine are very similar). One change in a concept usually leads to many changes in the meanings of a word or many words. Some of Bernie’s “words” have been rewritten by me in order to update the material as old ideas were discarded and new ones came to fruition (i.e., the infundibulum is epidermal). A small amount of material comes from “others” and has been paraphrased or rewritten. (However, this is a tribute to Bernie.) Its essence and beyond is “Ackermanian.” Much of the material has been paraphrased from Bernie’s works. A portion of the material is copied verbatim from Bernie’s material. In addition the reader should keep in mind the following: Whenever I say Bernie’s works I am including his coauthors, if any. In summary, the glossaries and “The Journal” were the most useful. Its use accounts for why there are so many words in the “A’s” compared to other letters since this was the only letter for which definitions were done. and other authors) and Bernie’s material from other places, (i.e., Indianapolis meetings, Palm Springs meetings, AAD meetings, ISDP, ASDP, as well as the material from the Institute of Dermatopathology at Jefferson in Philadelphia and the Ackerman Academy in New York, etc.) The Journal has been extremely useful. The journal, Dermatopathology Practical & Conceptual (with Almut Böer, M.D. Discussions of words have been taken from: My task has been to “pluck” the words, ideas, and concepts out, organize them, rewrite some and add some of my own. The Oxford Dictionary, second edition revised, says “dictionary: a reference book containing an alphabetical list of words with information given for each word, usually including meaning, pronunciation, and etymology.” This work is essentially based on Bernie’s opinions about words. This compendium of words is not meant to be “original” nor is, it a “dictionary” as defined. They encouraged others (using their model) to continue this work. in the journal, Dermatopathology: Practical & Conceptual used an “extended discussion of each word.” They managed to get through the “A’s” (over a two year period) and attempted to show others how a dictionary should be completed. Bernie’s own efforts with Almut Böer, M.D. Bernie considered Morris Leider’s 1976 dermatology dictionary a very limited one for many reasons. Many tried to complete this “project” (in Philadelphia, New York, and elsewhere) but none succeeded. He also felt that this dictionary would serve pathology as well. mediterranei in coral bleaching was unknown until now.A Bernard Ackerman always had a “dream” that a dictionary would be created for dermatopathology (and dermatology) so that these fields could better communicate with one another, in one “language.” He felt that until a real dictionary came into being neither would be authentic branches of knowledge. 2001 should be considered a later synonym of V. Collectively, the genotypic and phenotypic data presented in this study suggest that V. mediterranei showed almost identical fatty acid composition and phenotypical features. The type strains of both species shared 77% DNA similarity, as determined by DNA-DNA hybridisation experiments at stringent conditions. Numerical analysis of the FAFLP band patterns indicated that the type strain of V. The coral bleaching Vibrio shiloi LMG 19703(inverted perpendicular) was characterized by means of Fluorescent Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (FAFLP), DNA-DNA hybridisation, mol% G+C content, fatty acids methyl ester (FAME) analysis and phenotypical tests. He throws in a character – Lukas, a love interest for Jules – who rings false. That story grew as readers fell in love with the world Howey had created, and as he wrote, the tightness and the skill with which he began unravelled somewhat. It started life as a very good short story. It's partly down, I think, to the way the novel developed. He has had enormous fun with the details of his dystopia: the lottery inhabitants of the silo must go through to be allowed to reproduce, following a death the reality of life in a world partitioned by a single enormous staircase the claustrophobia of underground existence. Jules is an attractively grease-stained heroine, and some of the tribulations Howey pushes his protagonists through are truly horrendous – and engrossing. Holston, the old mayor Jahns and Holston's deputy, Marnes, are unusual, fully realised characters. Some elements of Wool work brilliantly: the first two sections are frightening, intriguing and mysterious. Clearly, then, she's going to be forced to confront the real world, and her investigations into the whys and wherefores of the silo's existence swiftly prove dangerous. She's utterly unintrigued by the outside, "an uninhabitable wasteland devoid of anything useful". Not Jules, though, the tough, ingenious mechanic who takes over from Holston as Howey's lead character. But ancient children's books contain images of a colourful planet, and despite the edicts forbidding so much as a mention of the outside world, much of the silo yearns for it. The priests say the silo has always been there, created by a benevolent god to protect them from the deadly atmosphere outside. Holston is grappling his way towards a realisation that there might be more to the world than the 150 floors of the silo and its strict, unbreakable rules. 'Tell her I want to go outside.'"Ī great pleasure of dystopian fiction is the reader's excess of knowledge: we know what the world used to be, and watch characters struggle towards the truth. He let out a sigh, that heavy breath he'd been holding for three years. Inexplicably, he locks himself into the silo's holding cell. The 60-page story with which Wool opens covers what might be the last hours of Holston, the sheriff of the silo, who is still mourning the death of his wife through "cleaning" years earlier. The filth of the atmosphere gradually coats the cameras capturing the view, and the silo's capital punishment is "cleaning": the criminal is sent outside to polish the lenses before being overcome by poisonous gases. The outside world can only be seen through a blurry image projected onto a wall, "lifeless hills. This is a world where the air is deadly, and where humanity has lived ever since anyone can remember, in a giant underground silo, a bunker hundreds of storeys deep, creating everything people need beneath the earth. This author can really write, and the dystopian life he has imagined is, at times, truly disturbing. The Fifty Shades comparison does Howey an injustice, however. His novel now runs to over 500 pages and has hit US bestseller lists, with book deals on both sides of the Atlantic, and film rights picked up by Ridley Scott. By October, readers were clamouring for more, and he duly obliged. Howey initially self-published the first instalment of his post-apocalyptic story – just 60 pages – in July 2011. Perhaps inevitably, Hugh Howey's Wool has been described as the science fiction version of Fifty Shades of Grey. We are very aware that the 3-month to 10-year segment of the US Treasury yield curve briefly inverted during the quarter, but are more interested in the fact that the 2- to 10-year segment, which we view as a recession indicator, did not. US growth and corporate earnings may be in a soft patch, but a second half pick up seems likely. The US remains in a slowly developing economic cycle with historically low unemployment and little inflation. Rather, global economic data is generally improving. Like many headlines, I think this one is backward looking. Focus on Where the Economy Is Heading, Not Where It Has BeenĪ recent headline in The Financial Times claimed that global economies were in a synchronized downturn, a reversal from the synchronized growth we saw last year. Setting political views aside, equity investors should recognize that he may take steps, either fiscally or through policy, to bolster US equity returns. As I have remarked in the past, President Trump, rightly or wrongly, seems to equate stock market performance with the success of his administration. Though I always caution against letting politics sway investment decisions, I do think it is important to be mindful of policy actions that may affect near-term results. The second quarter is probably a period of blocking and tackling, with no significant up or down moves, but look for better results in the second half of the year. Overall, we still see value in US equities and even more value in emerging market equities. Given the current low rate environment, a higher P/E is justified. However, those long run statistics have to be viewed in the context of prevailing interest rates. US equity valuations were pretty cheap in December 2018 and now after the first quarter recovery, they are slightly above the long run historical average. We are still looking at S&P earnings of $160-$170 at 19x earnings, so I think there is a little, but not a lot of room for the S&P 500 to appreciate further. Though consensus forecasts now call for a 5% decline, we think profits will be closer to flat and view this as an earnings soft patch, not a case of continued deterioration throughout the year. Then, toward the tail end of 2019, as year-over-year earnings comparisons improve and trade tensions ease, we could see stocks resume their upward trend.Īt end of 2018, analysts’ consensus called for the S&P 500 to show flat year-over-year profit growth. That doesn’t necessarily mean a decline, but maybe no more significant gains until summer. After all, delivering a 14% return for a full year is something of a feat, let alone over three months. A month later, the S&P was at 2903 and since then has surpassed the record high on both an intraday and closing basis.Īfter such a strong run that set new record highs, we expect markets to pause, digest the large gain and solidify their footing. As usual, I was the most bullish at the table, asserting that the record would be reclaimed before our next meeting in September and perhaps even in the coming weeks. One of the questions we debated was “when will the S&P 500 recapture 2940?” That was the record set in September 2018. Stocks Expected to Pause, Then Resume Upward Trend in Second HalfĮarlier this year, I traveled to Singapore for the semi-annual Wigmore Association meeting. After what now seems a brief intermission, the bull market’s show has gone on. We believed that if the Federal Reserve softened its stance on raising interest rates or the China/US trade talks showed progress, investors might suddenly feel better about the capital markets. If you recall our comments in the midst of the decline, we focused on what it would take to spark a rebound and we determined it wouldn’t take much. While the magnitude of the rally may prove a bit overzealous, the positive market direction made sense based on headline news and data early in the year. Bond sectors linked to equities – such as high-yield – did exceptionally well. Fixed income markets were also quite strong as interest rates fell. Global equities, whose fourth quarter decline was less dramatic than their US counterparts, happily joined the party, rallying throughout the first quarter. US equities, represented by the S&P 500, had their best single quarter since 2009 and their best first quarter since 1998. But here we are at the end of the first quarter and instead of a closing bow, equities are once again showing resiliency and strength. In the midst of last quarter’s climactic downfall, investors couldn’t help wondering if the curtain was finally falling on the great bull market. We have stayed at most of the AI's on the Island, stayed at the Occidental (royal section) in 2022, thought the resort was better than expected and we rank the resort #2, whereas the Cozumel Palace #1., although the gap from #1 to #2, is huge. We are Secrets & Iberostar fans but would not stay at either the Iberostar or Secrets Cozumel for several reasons. Edited: 8:27 pm, April 19, 2023Ĭomparing Secrets, Occidental & Iberostar, normally that would be a simple #1, #2, & #3, but not so fast. Note, all these hotels are at the south area of the island, so depending on how often you will go out to town or excursions, it may be better to rent a car than taking taxis. North side of Cozumel has better shore snorkeling but they have rocky shores and not sandy shores. Royal level rooms are closer to the beach, so you won't have to walk far to get to the beach, however, the downside is that you have to walk a bit to get to the front of the hotel (this is a spaced out resort).Īs far as snorkeling, those hotels are on the south area with the beaches, thus, beach shore snorkeling will not be the best (may have to take a boat out little further out). But, Occidental has the big and clean rooms, which is a plus. Their beach has eroded big time from the last hurricane, so, other hotel beaches will be better. Avoid their buffet as much as you can (it is left out in open, hot, humid air). Highly recommend you take a taxi into town at least once to sample one of the wonderful restaurants there.Ĭan't comment on Secrets and Iberostar, however, if you reserve Occidental, make sure to go with the Royal level room, it is their 1st tier room, food, and service that allows you private Royal level only ala carte restaurant and free room service from the Royal level restaurant and Royal level only pool (that is the one that is what the above poster mentioned about being in the middle of the mangroves) and, overall, you will get better service. Sunscape Saber had the better beach of the three, and since it’s connected to Secrets I would assume their beach is also good. The only time we’ve gotten sick on Cozumel after 40+ trips was during our two-night stay there. We ordered the chocolate cake for dessert and actually called the waiter over to make sure that’s what was served because it didn’t taste or look like chocolate. Even the specialty Mexican restaurant was very unimpressive. We thought the food, except for the breakfast buffet, was awful. One pool was in the middle of the mangroves with no view, so didn’t go to that one. Occidental: rooms were bigger and more modern however, we didn’t like the long walk on a boardwalk through mangroves to get to the beach and pools. The beach was fine you need water shoes but you need them at most places on Cozumel. Iberostar: We liked the hut-like rooms, the pool, the food, and the layout/landscaping there. We’ve stayed at Iberostar and Occidental but not Secrets (although we have stayed at Sunscape Sabor, which is connected to and beside Secrets). |
